DIY ModPodge Recipe

I have now made two crafts with this  DIY mod podge recipe. And I don’t think I will ever be needing to buy any particular modge podge for this type of project. I used this recipe but adjusted it after reading the reviews. I used this for my Lampshade project and my Bowl Project. If you are doing something different I would test it in a smaller ratio just in case it doesn’t turn out quite right. lampshadeThe magic modpodge recipe

2 Cups of Flour

1 Cup of Sugar

Between 1-3 cups of Water but keep adding until it’s perfect for your project (not too thick or too watery)

Add Tbsp of Oil

In a pot threw in the flour and sugar and turned the stove on to medium heat

I then added the water slowly  so it wouldn’t get super clumpy

I kept adding more and more water until I thought it was right thickness

Added the oil and mixed

All done!

Whale Songs in Tonga

***Featured Post***

Tonga, also known as the friendly island, a beautiful island with a plethora of untouched nature for us to experience. It’s still so raw and compared to the other islands less “touristy.” Tonga has always been my place of ancestry and identity. For me as a kid, when we went to Tonga we just did the normal things like go to the market, swim in the dirty water in the city, go to the haa’monga a maui (sunrise rocks) and play with the cuzzies. But going back next time, whenever that is… will be a completely different experience. I have so much on my bucket list that I want to do there, and swimming with the whales is definitely one of them.

In the post Whale Songs in Tonga, Millie Slater describes this wonderful experience of swimming with the wales. She goes on to describe this experience with her family as “one of the greatest experiences of our lives”. One can only imagine this experience of being able to swim with these magnificent intelligent animals that rule the oceans.  While their everyday life consists of crunching numbers at Slater Chartered Accountancy in New Zealand, being able to escape for a few days and take their office to the ocean made for a well-deserved holiday.

Her beautiful account of their sea adventure gives us a firsthand experience of becoming one with the ocean and its creatures. I love the way she explains the mutual respect and love for the animals. After reading her mesmerizing article I want to book a flight to Tonga right away and have this experience for myself.  I love the idea of creating memories with family and this is definitely one that will never be forgotten To read more about their wonderful family adventure and for their recommendations on which tours they took, head over to their blog.

DIY Yarn Lamp Shade

Doing this Yarn lampshade has been on one of my to do lists since we moved into our house. I had initially wanted to do a doily lampshade as they went along much better with my vintage theme I have going on in my living room. But I didn’t find enough doilies to do this project and I had plenty of yarn! I have finally come around to doing it. Yay and it was a lot easier than I had expected.

I didn’t want to spend any money of course on expensive big balloons. Initially I was going to use a balloon but I really wanted something bigger and not a oval shape. So I ended up just using those inflatable balls I borrowed from my neighbor’s baby. I know I’m pretty cheap asking to borrow something I can buy for $3 at the most. But anywho they were kind enough to let me borrow this ball and so I got cracking on this project. Light fixtures are one thing I love but feel like I shouldn’t spend too any money on.

I started off by making the modge podge recipe. Yes I made that too. I didn’t buy the expensive kind so I found this recipe here. But I adjusted the recipe and made a perfect one to my liking here. The adjusted recipe was perfect for this project. I used the entire amount. I was pretty happy with the entire result of it. I don’t think it will ever get hot enough to burn the yarn as we hardly use this light. I was worried how I was going to place it on the light fixture but the yarn is easy enough to move around and cut to fit around whatever fixture you have. I started the project at about 8am and once everything was all said and done and drying out in the sun for the whole day I finished the project at about 8pm. If you want to be extra cautious you should leave it for a complete 24 hours. But I was a little bit too excited. haha

So if you want to make your own light fixture here are the things you may need Or take a look at this easy video tutorial

  1. Yarn – A full one preferable depending on how big your project is
  2. Modge Podge or Wallpaper glue or my DIY Recipe
  3. Balloon or Ball
  4. Tshirt you don’t mind getting dirty

Good luck and have fun!!! Let me know if the comments below if it worked or didn’t!!! Or let me know of some crafts projects you would like to see!!!

Tips for Whitening your Teeth

***Featured Guest Post***

We all want to achieve that bright smile that we see in movies and magazines. Unfortunately, the pearly whites that we see in the media are results of expensive dental treatments and years of oral care. For ordinary people who do not have enough money, achieving the whitest teeth possible through teeth whitening at home will result from hard work, commitment, and discipline.

Fortunately, achieving the bright smile that you have been dreaming of need not be expensive. As a matter of fact, there are different things that you can do in order to whiten your teeth and brighten your smile right in the comfort of your home. The key lies in finding the right natural remedies and dental tools that you can use in order to minimize and eradicate tooth stains. You will also need to get rid of certain lifestyle routines that cause your teeth to get stained and instead take up different habits that will help you ensure your teeth and mouth are clean every day. With these key practices in place, you will achieve amazing results from your efforts to do teeth whitening at home.

Key Lifestyle Changes for Teeth Whitening at Home

First off, you should make sure that you brush your teeth properly and regularly. There will be times when you would be tempted to skip your dental routine, but it is imperative that you resist this temptation and go ahead with brushing, flossing, and proper rinsing. Brush your teeth gently to avoid discoloration and tooth decay. Do not forget to remove food particles that are stuck between your teeth by using waxed floss. Finally, rinse your mouth using one full glass of water to ensure that all sugars and acids are removed.

Next, make sure that you avoid leaving your mouth feeling dry and dehydrated. To ensure proper dental health and for your efforts for teeth whitening at home to take full effect, you need to have an ample amount of saliva inside your mouth every time. Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense. It limits the growth of bad bacteria and reduces the level of acid inside your mouth. So whenever you feel that your mouth is starting to feel dry, chew gum to avoid dehydration and to ensure ample saliva supply.

If you are a smoker, then yellow and stained teeth should come as no surprise for you. The tar and nicotine that you get from smoking cigarettes will do nothing in helping you achieve whiter teeth. Smoking will stain your teeth and, in the worst case scenario, will weaken your immune system and cause tooth loss. If you want to start your way towards achieving whiter teeth, then you should quit smoking altogether.

There are also different foods and drinks that cause teeth stain. Coffee and carbonated soda, for example, cause yellow teeth and cavities. If you are thinking of starting to try teeth whitening at home, then you should limit your intake of these beverages. If you cannot avoid drinking them, then you should at least make sure that you rinse your mouth with water immediately afterwards.

Eating the right food will help you to whiten your teeth

If you are aiming to whiten your teeth at home, you have to make sure that you practice a certain level of restraint when it comes to choosing the foods that you will place inside your mouth. Here are some foods that you should eat in order to enjoy better results and whiter teeth. Overhaul your diet and get as much of these foods on your plate.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away and it also helps in whitening your teeth as well! The mere act of biting and chewing an apple is enough to give your teeth the scrubbing that it needs in order to become whiter and cleaner. Apples also contain a high level of malic acid, which stimulates saliva production and helps remove teeth stain.

In the process of trying out teeth whitening at home, most people often think that they should completely do away with sweets, including sweet fruits. This is not necessarily true because raisins, despite being sweet, can actually help you whiten your teeth. Eating raisins promotes production of saliva and also causes your mouth to produce an enzyme that neutralizes acids and limits the spread of bacteria.

Strawberries are rich in antioxidants that promote clearer skin and cleaner teeth! This kind of food is rich in ellagitannins which is a kind of antioxidant that limits the production of bacteria that cause stains. It also contains a high level of vitamin C, which helps in promoting healthier gums and in limiting the occurrence of periodontal diseases.

Natural Ways for Teeth Whitening at Home

Teeth whitening need not be an expensive process involving high-end procedures and never-ending dentist visits. Believe it or not, there are different natural remedies that you can use in order to whiten your teeth and make your mouth healthier at the same time. The materials that you will find are already most likely present in your very own kitchen! If not, you can simply make a quick visit to your local grocery store. Here are some natural tricks that you may use to achieve a brighter smile in the comfort of your own home.

One of the simplest yet most effective natural ingredients that you can use in order to whiten your teeth at home is coconut oil. Simply apply a layer of coconut oil on all the surfaces of your teeth right after brushing them. You can also choose to swish one spoonful of coconut oil inside your mouth for around ten minutes. Once done, simply rinse your mouth with water. This method of teeth whitening at home is simple and safe, and finding coconut oil for this purpose can be pretty simple too.

For smokers who want to have whiter teeth and brighter smiles, apple cider vinegar can also help. Put an ample amount of apple cider vinegar on your toothbrush and gently scrub the surface of your teeth. After rinsing with water, you may brush your teeth using your regular toothpaste. You will need to consistently do this routine for at least a month in order to see results from this method of teeth whitening at home. Worry not because your efforts will surely pay off. Those who have tried this method before claim that using apple cider vinegar provides results similar to those of professional teeth cleaning.

Some people swear by the power of lemon and orange peels for teeth whitening. Homemakers have been using peels for home cleaning for ages, but it turns out that these can help clean and whiten teeth, too! Start with peeling your lemon or your orange. Make sure that you keep the white part intact because it has the chemicals that you need for teeth whitening. Next, you should gently rub the white part of the lemon or orange peel against your teeth for around five minutes. Let the juice sit for another ten minutes before brushing your teeth using your regular toothpaste.

Finally, if you think that the toothpaste that you are using is not doing its job of whitening your teeth, then you should substitute it with a carefully prepared sea salt mixture. Simply mix half a tablespoon of sea salt with an ounce of water. Place the head of your toothbrush into this mixture for five minutes; afterwards, you may use it to brush your teeth. Rinse with water after brushing. The sea salt mixture will help create an alkaline environment inside your mouth and kill germs and bacteria that cause stains and discoloration.

Cleaning Naturally for the lazy House Wife

Every time I use to picture stay at home mothers I would picture this kind of woman in my mind… takaritok1

But now that I have become a stay home mum this is how I feel like I am…

I know I should be better at cleaning,  cooking, doing the laundry and making sure my house is in tip top condition. But playing, feeding and spending time with my baby and also making sure she doesn’t get a diaper rash or fall down our stairs oh and writing my blog and facebook take priority. (opps)  I know i’m not your perfect housewife and you can count that you will never have the laundry done and ironed and organized for you! But I know one thing is I can’t leave my house a complete dump so I have to do something. In terms of cleaning products I have resulted in trying to go the natural route but it has to be easy. I don’t like having or using harsh chemicals because Miss A is getting into everything and it’s just nicer cleaning and not feeling like you are suffocating yourself right…

So the other day I knew it had been a while since I changed her diaper. I was too lazy to do it at her changing table so I just took it off in the living room and just let her run around for a little bit. Thinking it was cute for her to crawl around without her diaper I let her run free free… free my child!! Then you guessed it while she was running free she let loose and peed on our carpet!!! Who knew a minute of letting her be free would do that? So while trying to put a new diaper on her and also googling some natural way to clean our 7 month old carpet I came across this awesome remedy.

Such an easy all natural way to clean. All i did was mixed water and vinegar together and dropped in some lemon oil and once I tried to get out as much of her pee out of the carpet I sprayed the vinegar solution on top and rubbed it in. And done…. like magic!!! If you want to know more natural ingredients to keep in the house check this article out. But definitely a vital for me in my house! Basic ingredients to keep on hand are baking soda, and vinegar and if you have lemon oil that’s a bonus!!!

4 Benefits of Deep Breathing

***Sponsored Post***

My husband told me that in one of his classes in high school he learnt how to breathe deeply as a technique for relaxation which I thought was an odd thing to learn in school. But now thinking about it, good breathing habits are so helpful in many situations. I know for me when I took singing lessons breathing was vital in terms of performing an average and an amazing song. Knowing how to use your diaphragm was important and controlling that breath makes a world of difference!! I have also noticed when I am running or working out to focusing in on my breathing helps me do the workouts better and endure.

We all know that stress is part of everyday modern life whether you are a student, working, or at home. One of the easiest ways to combat this is being aware of your breathing. When you are mindful of your breath it ensures your body doesn’t go into flight or fight mode. Here are a few techniques on why you should be more aware and conscious of your breathing.

  1. Deep Breathing is Calming and Relaxing– Breathing brings in much needed oxygen into the brain which reduces anxiety levels! When you breathe slowly, deeply and purposefully into areas tense and this will help them relax those muscles.
  2. Gets Rid of Toxins– Did you know that your body is made to release 70% of toxins through breathing? So if you don’t breathe effectively you are not getting rid of all the toxins that your body needs.  Which then means your other body parts will have to work overtime to get rid of them!
  3. Relieves Pain– Studies haveshown that when we feel pain we tend to hold our breath. For example mothers going through labor tend to get told to take breathing classes so they don’t forget to breathe while going through those crazy pains. Remember that breathing deeply and breathing into pain will help to release it although this is hard to remember at that point in time. Deep breathing also releases endorphins which are the body’s natural feel good pain killers.
  4. Regulate your weight– Obviously you won’t be losing 10 pounds by just breathing. But it’s been proven if you are underweight oxygen feeds the cells and if you are overweight the extra oxygen will help burn excess fat more efficiently.

Wherever you are in life these tips can benefit anyone of all ages. If you want extra help and reminders on the correct breathing technique check out Square Breathing Meditation App may be able to help you.  The Square Breathing Meditation App will guide you step-by-step on the correct Square Breathing technique when you are feeling the most stressed.  Square Breathing Meditation App is available for android phones.
